Fly Papers: The Aeronautical Library at Caledon

I found a balloon in my inventory about a week ago, and not one of those rubbish ones that people at parties twist into a Daschund with dropsy, either: this is a miniature 'Henry Gale-meets-Phileas Fogg' style balloon, from the Caledon Library group. It was a lovely gift especially as I'm just learning how to animate prims. You can imagine the fun I had making it fly around my skybox. But even nicer than that, inside the balloon I found a wonderful collection of books - adventures in flight by pioneering spirits of yore, like The Boy's Book of Airships and Paradoxes of Nature and Science. It's a lighthearted fanfare in celebration of the new Airships Collection opening in Victoria City at the beginning of September. I dropped in to see Mr. Drinkwater the other day as he continued with the finishing touches to the new Airship Collection Library. It floats just above the city as one might expect from the witty and intelligent Caledonians. A few elegant touches express the era without overegging it; airy, from the light greenglass floor to the iron struts, there are no cam problems here, and the aetheric (or online) materials are laid out in such a way even a laggy-brained person like me can quickly navigate. The boards point you towards such fascinating subjects as 'Gadgets', 'TV' and as in this photo, 'Movies and Videos'. Whether you're doing research or just browsing, you'll quickly find something of interest.

I'm not going to lie to you, I did fall off the airship twice, trying to take a better picture than these; it was a soft landing though, there's a a garden (and a wonderful fountain shown down in the Italian bit) below the airship and there are erudite plans afoot for the flowerbeds - they will become the home of the next Caledon Collection, - on gardening, naturally. Soon to come also a new Whitehorn Library, linked to this area by bridges and tunnels, all in the steampunk tradition - breath bated, we await the innovations!

Use the central TP point in Caledon Victoria City to see all the great shops here and the whimsical giant top hat Caledon's 'Guvnah' Desmond Shang has draped on the pergola. Don't miss the the clock in Silver Rose, and the grand and comfortable Reading Room, with its twin cannons (I believe they're used to eliminate loud whisperers) - it's full of notices about groups, performances, and information about Caledon. If you walk right through the Reading Room you'll come to the Whitehorn Memorial Library currently hosting the Ada Byron King exhibition. Curator and gogo dancer Siri Woodget (her description, not mine) took a moment from her evening on the town to give me the tour in person - it's about the life, love and interests of the daughter of the famous poet Lord Byron, who was in her own right a ... no, I won't spoil it for you, but it's a fascinating slice of life with delicious layers of science and history and romance, so... Go see for yourself! and read Siri's blog about the opening too! But hurry, the show will be here only a few more weeks.

Well, after all that excitement, time to go home and curl up with a good book. And what could be better than Paradoxes of Nature and Science by William Hampson, from the balloon collection.

Circa una settimana fa ho ricevuto un regalo dal gruppo Caledon... una mongolfiera coloratissima, come quello del mago di Oz o di Phileas Fogg. Che tempismo! Sto imparando ad usare un programma per animare i prim, questa mongolfiera pensavo subito di farla volare. Dopo che mi son divertita un po' (e anche frustrata perché è molto più difficile di quanto sembra) ho guardato con maggior attenzione la mongofiera stessa. Contiene alcuni bei libri sulla scienza e tecnica del volo: un libro per ragazzi The Boy's Book of Airships, e (il mio preferito, perche amo i paradossi,) Paradoxes of Nature and Science. Ho sempre voluto capire come funzionano i boomerang, questo libro lo spiega. Non c'è da stupirsi il regalo festaggia la prossima apertura della nuova biblioteca aeronautica a Caledon.

Sono arrivata alla biblioteca aeronautica che, come vedi, prende la forma di un dirigibile in volo sopra la bella città di Victoria City. Cosa offre la biblioteca? Risorse eteriche - cioè siti in rete - con immagini, racconti, documenti scentifici e fantascientifici su i razzi, gli aerei, i dirigibili, le mongolfiere - insomma informazioni sui dispositivi per il volo, costruiti in realtà o nella fantasia. Una risorsa per costruttori e sognatori. Ma anche un luogo molto simpatico dove si possono incontrare persone di indole... avventuroso. Nella foto, gli aerostati sono stati costruiti da CoyoteAngel Dimsum, owner (o come dicono qui Duchessa) e fondatore di questa biblioteca. E' stato l'abilissimo direttore delle biblioteche di Caledon JJ Drinkwater a mostrarmi come funziona (mi ha anche dovuto salvare quando sono caduta dal dirigibile tentando di scattare delle foto...) basta cliccare sui cartelli per trovare i documenti, filmati o libri che interessano. Io ho voluto vedere cosa avevano sul TARDIS, la 'nave spaziale' (e non solo) di Dr. Who, il mio personaggio fantascientifico preferito. Ho commentato la bellezza della citta' e ho domandato quali progetti JJ ha intenzione di intraprendere quando questo ha finito qui.

Certo l'avevo notato. Ci ero caduta tra i fiorellini. Per poco non ero finita in questa splendida fontana.

JJ Drinkwater: Metteremo una biblioteca anche là. Saranno libri e immagini di giardini e il giardinaggio. E non solo. Tra poco si cominciano i lavori per la nuova biblioteca ampliata Whitehorn, tra questa piazza e il nuovo edificio ci sarà un bel sentiero con ponti e gallerie.

Nemmeno io mi fermo, perché subito dopo ho fatto una visita al Whitehorn Library. Se non ti va di fare sempre il TP nei posti nuovi, puoi anche usare il punto TP principale in Victoria City, e andare a piedi a vedere le biblioteche e i negozi del sim - fèrmati ad ammirare l'orologio sul piano terra di Silver Rose, è speciale. Il Reading Room uno dei principali edifici nella piazza si riconosce subito dai cannoni all'entrata (si usano per sparare i griefers, credo). Passando attraverso il Reading Room si arriva al Whitehorn Memorial Library. Attualmente ospita una mostra sulla figlia del poeta inglese Lord Byron. Siri Woodgett, archivista anche in real, ha ideato e costruito la mostra, ci siamo messe comode sotto il bel quadro di Ada e mi ha raccontato

del suo blog, la storia di Ada e l'idea per farla onore in Second Life un luogo che lei avrebbe sicuramente trovato affascinante per le sue possibilità infinite. Ada Byron King era una gentildonna molto inconsueta, appassionata di cose scientifiche in un'epoca quando le donne dovevano dedicarsi solo ai fatti domestici; la mostra illustra la sua vita, gli amori, e le invenzioni le idee e le scoperte scientifiche del periodo... ma per capire bene devi andare di persona! Stanca dopo tutti questi giri sono tornata a casa, mi sono messa comoda e ho finalmente aperto il mio libro sui paradossi... Ecco come funziona il boomerang!
