Feed the birds

There are a number of explanations for Charlie Parker's nickname. Some say he ran over a chicken (a 'yard bird') when on tour with Jay McShann, and insisted they went back to scoop it up so he could have his landlady cook it for his dinner. On the other hand, they say he wanted to be 'free as a bird'...
Parker was raised in Kansas City, Missouri and mastered the saxophone at 11, playing with the school band. He spent time in Chicago, Los Angeles and went on an important tour in Europe, but New York was his spiritual home; he got there in 1938 and took a job washing dishes till he hit the big time. In 1959 the Clique club was renamed Birdland in his honour. A lifetime of smoking and a heroin addiction got the better of him at last and in 1955 he died of pneumonia in the New York apartment of the 'bebop baroness' Nica de Koenigswarter. The coroner estimated his age as 53. Parker was just 34 years old. A close collaboration with many jazz greats notably Dizzy Gillespie produced many memorable recordings - over 100 albums bear his name, not to mention compilations - two of the defining tracks are Yardbird Suite and A Night in Tunisia.
The man who invented Bebop had this to say about his revolutionary new style of jazz: "I'd been getting bored with the stereotyped changes [harmonies] that were being used all the time. ... I found that by using the higher intervals of a chord as a melody line and backing them with appropriately related changes I could play the thing I'd been hearing. I came alive. "
He still lives. No shortage of jazz clubs in Second Life. Phat Cat's with a mighty 11,00 VIP members and between 60-70 people on the sim on any given night and, as Everlena Fromund pointed out to me, has regular live sessions 5 days a week. Other popular PG venues include Bogart's (shown here), the resort at Jade's Jazz Island, Frank's Place and Blue Fusion. Among the Italian sims, you'll find Itland Jazz which has just celebrated its revamp with this presentation. No shortage of variety either: blue note, swing, even something called Asian jazz at the romantic Meatspace - not exactly a place built with me in mind, but I really enjoyed the orrery next door. See the Italian part for Meatspace's skyline portrait.
I asked music guru Votslav Hax of Pat O'Brien's what the deal is with jazz in SL these days.
Votslav Hax: SL has been undergoing changes with the recession, and independent musicians are struggling. Smaller venues are closing so there are fewer places for them to play, and it's harder for them to cover their costs. That's why at Pat's we've started the 2buck presentations. There's a charge at the door of L500. That's only $2 American, not a huge fee, but it helps the musicians to be able to continue to bring great music inworld, rather than depending on tips. It's been a great success, we had 48 people at our most recent 2buck presentation, which is a big crowd for a live SL music event. I'd say the best jazz vocalist in SL right now is Ankari Holder (I manager her, he said blushing). She's doing gigs all over the grid. You can go to her MySpace here to see her SL performance schedule. If Bebop is your thing, though, you may enjoy the new club opening on Gemini Isle next week. Here it is! A build by Julia Janus, the club has a grungy look and lots of photos to remind you of the jazz heroes, and the classic movies of the period. There's more than music here: you should go and see in person nessuno Myoo's moving sculpture of a jazz trio, complete with Blue Notes, not to mention Aloisio Congrejo's study of Miles Davis. Moondoggirl Moomintoog (in RL Nashville-based Jan Edwards) opens procedings with what I know will be a wonderful evening. I hope to see you there.
Rinacqui a nuova vita."

Pat O'Brien's: Jazz on rez

Genius is the ability to put into effect
what is on your mind.
F. Scott Fitgerald
Welcome to New Orleans, and to Pat O'Briens the jewel in the crown of sim French Quarter. Excellent music. Interesting and diverse art. Atmosphere as cool and classy as the music. I was there for the first Thursday Night Jazz Session of the season. I only caught the first three acts, but it was beyond good - that's typical around here.
First up was Julian Hifeng, in RL Scott Fitzgerald, over 35 years a professional musician, who's rediscovering his jazz roots right here in the metaverse. Fast becoming a superstar in SL for both his music and his scholarly contributions in poetry and literature, he's featured here in both versions of reality. He has a very nice site on myspace - go see, you'll love it!
Like the other artists at Pat's, all his arrangements are original and there's a spontaneity about his pieces that speaks directly to his talent to turn the airwaves into liquid magic as he riffs from Bach to Richard Rogers, from Gershwin to McCartney and back.
When Julian had finished his set, it was time for a firm favourite of mine and everyone else's, Joaquin Gustav. Lots of lilting Latin pieces - he's a brilliant guitar player, and his between-songs banter has that South American thing going on that the ladies love. Lastly, I couldn't believe my ears when I heard Bones Writer. He blew us all away. A jazz pianist new to Pat O'Brien's I know he's going to become a regular. He's got the perfect look too - as the picture down below proves. Catch him at Pat's or join his group for upcoming performance details. You'll be hearing more about these artists in this blog, I know.
I managed to get a few words with the famed manager of the stars, Votslav Hax. I even persuaded him to pose on the bench outside the club, you can see the photo if you scroll down into the Italian regions... In my usual idly curious way, I wanted to know how he ended up here.
Votslav Hax: I was asked to run the place after Von Johin bought the sim. The name "Pat O'Brien's" was already here, and it being sinonimous with New Orleans...
I wondered if Vot was a NO guy or 'simply' a music guy?
Votslav Hax: no guy?
From New Orleans, I meant.
Votslav Hax: smg: simply music guy
Lmao, said I. Julian's music filled the room with that cool warmth only a really good musician can create, as I asked what (apart from me 'n' my questions) is the worst/hardest thing about 'doing' music in SL. I also wanted to know more about the art on display.
Votslav Hax: The hardest thing is juggling rl/sl lives amongst musicians and schedules. We all
search out the art. What you're looking at right now is by Arinu Ling - we are very pleased to be able to show it here. If we see someone we all check him out and schedule him for a two week show. I've been doing this for over a year in SL, and I'm an artist in RL. I have my own gallery and studio downstairs. This plan closely resmbles a RL place i had a few years back, right down to the art on the walls, and the musicians...
Another friendly face at Pat O'Brien's is hostess BobbiJo Jonson. You can't miss her she's very warm and welcoming, and has distinctive red hair.
I asked her what's the best part of working here.
BobbiJo Jonson: the talent! I love seeing and meeting people from all over. Each time is different, the music, the sharing and interaction of artist and listener. I enjoy the real people, no canned music or reactions. There's a 'live-ness' here, it's something you don't find a lot in Second Life, the beauty of the artist. Here we are sharing his talent, and the way they respond to what is happening. They don't just play covers, or mind-dulling songs over and over, and there's this magical blending of being a listener, feeding off the artist, and visa versa. Votslav is choosy and he has an ear..... and knows good things. I have been listening to Julian for months. He's a great jazz performer, and here in Second Life he shines: but he is just beginning, I think. I love watching and seeing the talent. and Vots won't settle for second best.
Pat's is the place to be on Thurday nights and Saturday and Sunday for the brunch and early evening concerts, contact Symbiotic to get all the latest information and you are sure to find some of the best music in town ...
Step outside Pat's onto Bourbon Street, there's lots to see, including the pretty house shown below. Primsmith Kianeira MacDairmid of jewelry shop Dalriada at 201 Bourbon told me what she loves about this place.
Kianeira MacDiarmid: I set my own music station in this shop. I've been here about 5 months, I think - which is a lifetime in SL terms. I love it here, especially the trolley.
I had to ask about the name of the shop. Has it something to do with New Orleans?
Kianeira MacDiarmid: No. Dalriada is close to my heart as it is the Birthplace of the Nation of Scotland. Dalriada was in the Kilmartin Valley in the place we now call Scotland. The northern Irish immigrated there to a hill fort called Dunadd. They called themselves Scots. Then the Picts came too and they all lived together for a while. One night a fight broke out, the Picts were all drunk and they ended up getting killed, and the nation of Scotland was born.
Quite a tale. The shop is full of tiny wonders, I asked where she gets her inspiration from.
Kianeira MacDiarmid: My creations just appear on the end of my hand when i rez a prim. Some days nothing appears, other days I can't stop myself from creating! I know many don't like it but I love working with nano prims. I built a small shop for myself one day, here let me show you.
She rezzed the mini store at my feet.
Kianeira MacDiarmid: As you can see, I built it in miniature... then scaled it to enlarge it and only needed minor adjustments to some textures.
Genius. Just like the jazz. So there it is, friends of ArtsParks. The French Quarter, come for the music, stay for the jewels and the stories - or vice versa. Either way you'll be glad you did.

Il genio significa essere capaci di realizzare
quel che si ha in mente.

F. Scott Fitzgerald
