Gabrielle Riel: Reeling in the years

I like radio more than TV: the pictures are so much better.
Anonymous
I met Gabrielle Riel proprietor and genie behind SL's premier radio station Radio Riel on a bridge in sim Edison Hypatia. At least the bridge was there when I first arrived. It took me a good long while to rez, and poke my nose around, inspecting the buildings, and suddenly I was at the bottom of the sea.
Thirza Ember: Did I touch something I wasn't supposed to? I have a long history of that!
Gabrielle Riel: When you click the bridge it swings open to let ships through.
Thirza Ember: Lol oh ok, sorry.
Gabrielle Riel grins - np. She put the bridge back, and then told me all about the sim.
Gabrielle Riel: The theme here is 1890 - 1920 - North central North America, by which I mean the upper midwest- Wisconsin, Michigan, Ohio, Illinois, Indiana - and Ontario, Canada. My RL background is what inspired this theme: the river here and the bluffs on either side. I am from Michigan, and live only an hour from Canada. I am so pleased with how it turned out.
As the sim gradually rezzed, the buildings came into view, and I saw ...snow on the ground!
Gabrielle Riel: Yes, no grass until March 21 :-)
Looking around it was obvious that a lot of thought had gone into planning and constructing the sim, so I asked, how long did the build take?
Gabrielle Riel: Hmm... This was actually an existing sim; it used to be Greek Isle theme and had existing tenants...so there were several weeks of transition. It took about 4 weeks but I waited a little longer, because I knew some tenants would leave. I terraformed "manually" - I did not use a .raw file. Instead, I created the landscape on another empty sim and then saved it as a raw file. I put a lot of thought into the topography, and also how I would lay out parcels. The whole east side of the river through the sim is mostly residential, but Edison Corners is our commercial area with a gallery, a clothing store, and the HQ of Radio Riel. I wanted to stay true to a midwestern community, and I knew I could recreate that "look" with large parcels (2048 or bigger), giving a sense of wide-open space, just like we have here.
I owned an Open Space sim for two years - Caledon Carntaigh, where I had I had a huge manor, a little village, stables. I put a lot of work into creating a "look" there: looking back, that was really my training - 2 years with an Open Space sim made all the difference. This is the first time I took on a full sim like this. I share the sim with many friends. The majority of the residents here are associated with Radio Riel in one form or fashion. Two of my Presenters have lots here, my business manager, 2 of the Radio Riel Players, and our Storyteller.
Making it a 'riel' community in every way, I said, because I'm a punster even when they're not funny.
Gabrielle Riel nodded. That was my goal. I also hope to serve "fans", listeners, by giving them a place to spend time inworld. Places like this exist for communities of people, otherwise they become empty, meaningless lots. They draw together like-minded people. Look at me, I am here because 3 years ago I stumbled onto Caledon. I wouldn't go anywhere else.
As we walked along the East side of the river, Gabrielle told me about her radio station.
Gabrielle Riel: The story of Radio Riel - In the Fall of 2006, I had decided I wanted to be a DJ in Second Life, but not a "typical" DJ....I wanted to play Classical music in The Independent State of Caledon. It wasn't something I had done in RL; I had planned music for parties - big ones - like wedding showers and weddings, but I had never been a "DJ".
Thirza Ember: So what was your first performance like? Do you remember it?
Gabrielle Riel: Oh yes - clearly! I played a "music only" event in July of 2006 but my first REAL, live, with-voice event was Caledon's Halloween Ball 2006. I was so scared, I thought I would sound stupid, but at the same time, I was exhilarated. I hoped people would like the Classical music, and they did! I had a lot of compliments, and I got a lot of support from the Caledon organizers. When Christmas rolled around I was immediately enlisted in holiday planning, with the assumption I would handle music. No more quiet Miss Gabrielle Riel :-)
Thirza Ember: So at first it was more a DJ job.... how did that turn into a radio station?
Gabrielle Riel: It was wild! In January 2007, the idea hit me one day that Caledon could probably use its own radio station, and I knew I had a music library big enough to play something for a few hours a day, every day. I was a big fan of T1 Radio in SL, and I knew it was possible to do something like that, but in a Caledon flavor. At the same time people started approaching me, people that had been RL DJs, and who said "Can I work with you?" It's like people just appeared and said: "Lead us"! That is what is so funny, all of my people have RL professional experience. Of the four "founders" 2 were club DJs, 1 was a College radio DJ... and then me - with no "RL" experience! It came very naturally, I think, my brain thinks like a broadcaster.
I wondered what sort of technical know-how was needed to actually make a radio station work.
Gabrielle Riel: I would say a fair amount... although I went on Google and figured it all out myself and I have trained everyone that has come to me with the exception of my Presenter who has been a RL Audio Engineer for 35 years. My RL professional background is software training - I knew I could figure it out on my own.
Having listened to Radio Riel both inworld and online while in RL, I had to compliment Gabrielle on the easy quality of her broadcasts. The wonderful mix of both presenters and music must be a good fit for all kinds of sims, not just Caledon sims.
She nodded. That is really our goal, to appeal to ALL of the 19th century sims as well as classical music lovers.
She took me to see the HQ building.
Gabrielle Riel: As you can see, it is a wonderful build, created by my Presenter Edward Pearse: he's used inspiration from his own career, but I also specified that I really wanted an Edwardian feel, which has come off very well I think. The presenters use the little studio, and this is the "public" area. Every Thursday night we have Riel Radio Theatre and Riel 80s Mewsic here at HQ and from time to time we have dances on the roof.
Gabrielle Riel: Yes, I will show you my new adopted babies! Wait here and I'll TP you...
Bienvenue a la Nouvelle Toulouse ! This is based on New Orleans - 1890 - 1920; it's such the perfect counterpart to Edison - now I have the North and the South! I 'adopted' this sim, and its connecting sim (New Toulouse Algiers). They were built 9 months ago by Carricre Wind. She was no longer able to manage them, so she put them up for sale. I had not planned on more sims, but I did not want to see this community die; and, of course, what is New Orleans known for? Music! (well other things too!) I saw this as a perfect fit with Radio Riel. If you turn on your parcel music you will hear "Radio Riel - New Toulouse" a dedicated stream to this community. So we have our Main stream, which is 24/7, then there's our events stream - for events - and now RR-NT, 24/7. These sims are stunning; I can not claim any credit for their look and feel, other than the music, which we've tried to make a perfect fit with the rest of the place.
If she were going to create a house or a park that celebrated an artist or writer, something for people to come and visit here in New Toulouse, who would it be? Gabrielle Riel thinks : Hmm Here in New Toulouse...probably William Faulkner. He wrote about the American South, in the era that NT represents, so he'd be a good fit.

Thirza Ember: Lol oh ok, sorry.
Gabrielle Riel: Hmm... fammi pensare.
Bhe qui a New Toulouse, direi William Faulkner.

Pat O'Brien's: Jazz on rez

Genius is the ability to put into effect
what is on your mind.
F. Scott Fitgerald
Welcome to New Orleans, and to Pat O'Briens the jewel in the crown of sim French Quarter. Excellent music. Interesting and diverse art. Atmosphere as cool and classy as the music. I was there for the first Thursday Night Jazz Session of the season. I only caught the first three acts, but it was beyond good - that's typical around here.
First up was Julian Hifeng, in RL Scott Fitzgerald, over 35 years a professional musician, who's rediscovering his jazz roots right here in the metaverse. Fast becoming a superstar in SL for both his music and his scholarly contributions in poetry and literature, he's featured here in both versions of reality. He has a very nice site on myspace - go see, you'll love it!
Like the other artists at Pat's, all his arrangements are original and there's a spontaneity about his pieces that speaks directly to his talent to turn the airwaves into liquid magic as he riffs from Bach to Richard Rogers, from Gershwin to McCartney and back.
When Julian had finished his set, it was time for a firm favourite of mine and everyone else's, Joaquin Gustav. Lots of lilting Latin pieces - he's a brilliant guitar player, and his between-songs banter has that South American thing going on that the ladies love. Lastly, I couldn't believe my ears when I heard Bones Writer. He blew us all away. A jazz pianist new to Pat O'Brien's I know he's going to become a regular. He's got the perfect look too - as the picture down below proves. Catch him at Pat's or join his group for upcoming performance details. You'll be hearing more about these artists in this blog, I know.
I managed to get a few words with the famed manager of the stars, Votslav Hax. I even persuaded him to pose on the bench outside the club, you can see the photo if you scroll down into the Italian regions... In my usual idly curious way, I wanted to know how he ended up here.
Votslav Hax: I was asked to run the place after Von Johin bought the sim. The name "Pat O'Brien's" was already here, and it being sinonimous with New Orleans...
I wondered if Vot was a NO guy or 'simply' a music guy?
Votslav Hax: no guy?
From New Orleans, I meant.
Votslav Hax: smg: simply music guy
Lmao, said I. Julian's music filled the room with that cool warmth only a really good musician can create, as I asked what (apart from me 'n' my questions) is the worst/hardest thing about 'doing' music in SL. I also wanted to know more about the art on display.
Votslav Hax: The hardest thing is juggling rl/sl lives amongst musicians and schedules. We all
search out the art. What you're looking at right now is by Arinu Ling - we are very pleased to be able to show it here. If we see someone we all check him out and schedule him for a two week show. I've been doing this for over a year in SL, and I'm an artist in RL. I have my own gallery and studio downstairs. This plan closely resmbles a RL place i had a few years back, right down to the art on the walls, and the musicians...
Another friendly face at Pat O'Brien's is hostess BobbiJo Jonson. You can't miss her she's very warm and welcoming, and has distinctive red hair.
I asked her what's the best part of working here.
BobbiJo Jonson: the talent! I love seeing and meeting people from all over. Each time is different, the music, the sharing and interaction of artist and listener. I enjoy the real people, no canned music or reactions. There's a 'live-ness' here, it's something you don't find a lot in Second Life, the beauty of the artist. Here we are sharing his talent, and the way they respond to what is happening. They don't just play covers, or mind-dulling songs over and over, and there's this magical blending of being a listener, feeding off the artist, and visa versa. Votslav is choosy and he has an ear..... and knows good things. I have been listening to Julian for months. He's a great jazz performer, and here in Second Life he shines: but he is just beginning, I think. I love watching and seeing the talent. and Vots won't settle for second best.
Pat's is the place to be on Thurday nights and Saturday and Sunday for the brunch and early evening concerts, contact Symbiotic to get all the latest information and you are sure to find some of the best music in town ...
Step outside Pat's onto Bourbon Street, there's lots to see, including the pretty house shown below. Primsmith Kianeira MacDairmid of jewelry shop Dalriada at 201 Bourbon told me what she loves about this place.
Kianeira MacDiarmid: I set my own music station in this shop. I've been here about 5 months, I think - which is a lifetime in SL terms. I love it here, especially the trolley.
I had to ask about the name of the shop. Has it something to do with New Orleans?
Kianeira MacDiarmid: No. Dalriada is close to my heart as it is the Birthplace of the Nation of Scotland. Dalriada was in the Kilmartin Valley in the place we now call Scotland. The northern Irish immigrated there to a hill fort called Dunadd. They called themselves Scots. Then the Picts came too and they all lived together for a while. One night a fight broke out, the Picts were all drunk and they ended up getting killed, and the nation of Scotland was born.
Quite a tale. The shop is full of tiny wonders, I asked where she gets her inspiration from.
Kianeira MacDiarmid: My creations just appear on the end of my hand when i rez a prim. Some days nothing appears, other days I can't stop myself from creating! I know many don't like it but I love working with nano prims. I built a small shop for myself one day, here let me show you.
She rezzed the mini store at my feet.
Kianeira MacDiarmid: As you can see, I built it in miniature... then scaled it to enlarge it and only needed minor adjustments to some textures.
Genius. Just like the jazz. So there it is, friends of ArtsParks. The French Quarter, come for the music, stay for the jewels and the stories - or vice versa. Either way you'll be glad you did.

Il genio significa essere capaci di realizzare
quel che si ha in mente.

F. Scott Fitzgerald
