There are a number of explanations for Charlie Parker's nickname. Some say he ran over a chicken (a 'yard bird') when on tour with Jay McShann, and insisted they went back to scoop it up so he could have his landlady cook it for his dinner. On the other hand, they say he wanted to be 'free as a bird'...
Parker was raised in Kansas City, Missouri and mastered the saxophone at 11, playing with the school band. He spent time in Chicago, Los Angeles and went on an important tour in Europe, but New York was his spiritual home; he got there in 1938 and took a job washing dishes till he hit the big time. In 1959 the Clique club was renamed Birdland in his honour. A lifetime of smoking and a heroin addiction got the better of him at last and in 1955 he died of pneumonia in the New York apartment of the 'bebop baroness' Nica de Koenigswarter. The coroner estimated his age as 53. Parker was just 34 years old. A close collaboration with many jazz greats notably Dizzy Gillespie produced many memorable recordings - over 100 albums bear his name, not to mention compilations - two of the defining tracks are Yardbird Suite and A Night in Tunisia.
The man who invented Bebop had this to say about his revolutionary new style of jazz: "I'd been getting bored with the stereotyped changes [harmonies] that were being used all the time. ... I found that by using the higher intervals of a chord as a melody line and backing them with appropriately related changes I could play the thing I'd been hearing. I came alive. "
He still lives.
No shortage of jazz clubs in Second Life. Phat Cat's with a mighty 11,00 VIP members and between 60-70 people on the sim on any given night and, as Everlena Fromund pointed out to me, has regular live sessions 5 days a week. Other popular PG venues include Bogart's (shown here), the resort at Jade's Jazz Island, Frank's Place and Blue Fusion. Among the Italian sims, you'll find Itland Jazz which has just celebrated its revamp with this presentation. No shortage of variety either: blue note, swing, even something called Asian jazz at the romantic Meatspace - not exactly a place built with me in mind, but I really enjoyed the orrery next door. I asked music guru Votslav Hax of Pat O'Brien's what the deal is with jazz in SL these days.
Votslav Hax: SL has been undergoing changes with the recession, and independent musicians are struggling. Smaller venues are closing so there are fewer places for them to play, and it's harder for them to cover their costs. That's why at Pat's we've started the 2buck presentations. There's a charge at the door of L500. That's only $2 American, not a huge fee, but it helps the musicians to be able to continue to bring great music inworld, rather than depending on tips. It's been a great success, we had 48 people at our most recent 2buck presentation, which is a big crowd for a live SL music event. I'd say the best jazz vocalist in SL right now is Ankari Holder (I manager her, he said blushing). She's doing gigs all over the grid. If Bebop is your thing, though, you may enjoy the new club opening on Gemini Isle next week. Here it is! A build by Julia Janus, the club has a grungy look and lots of photos to remind you of the jazz heroes, and the classic movies of the period. There's more than music here: you should go and see in person nessuno Myoo's moving sculpture of a jazz trio, complete with Blue Notes, not to mention Aloisio Congrejo's study of Miles Davis. Moondoggirl Moomintoog (in RL Nashville-based Jan Edwards) opens procedings with what I know will be a wonderful evening. I hope to see you there.

In SL i jazz clubs non mancano e ci sono di ogni stile e tipo. Questa sarebbe un locale jazz asiatico, il romanticissimo Meatspace - ma a dire la verità mi è piaciuto di più il planetario del vicino visibile in questa foto. Nessuno a Meatspace, ma nei megalocali non manca mai un pubblico alla ricerca della buona musica... Everlena Fromund di Phat Cat's (ecco il micio nero del club) mi ha detto che il loro gruppo VIP conta più di 11,000 membri, e ospitano 60-70 avatar sul sim ogni sera. Come la maggior parte dei locali jazz, Phat Cat's offre un assortimento di cantanti e serate con live DJ oltre al stream; qui troverai sia newbies che una clientela lealissima, e (a giudicare dalle mie esperienza in questi giorni) un alto numero di simpatici - ma passeggeri - nuovi amici. Come a Bogart's (nella figura in alto, Jade's Jazz Island, e Frank's Place, Phat Cat's è PG e qui regnano le buone maniere e uno stile molto mainstream. Sui sim italiani ricordiamo il popolarissimo Itland Jazz - ha festeggiato la sua rinascita con questa presentazione pochi settimane fa.
Visto che siamo in una recessione (meta)globale, ho chiesto a impresario Votslav Hax del locale Pat O'Briens di commentare la situazione attuale per la musica in SL.
Votslav Hax: Non è un periodo molto facile per i musicisti indipendenti, devo dire. Molti locali sono spariti, e diventa difficile per i musicisti trovare un posto dove esibirsi. Chi suona col tip jar, ha constatato che i tips sono diminuiti in modo drammatico di recente. I musicisti vogliono regalarci dei momenti di relax, ma anche loro hanno delle spese da coprire. Per questo motivo, abbiamo ideato una nuova iniziativa da Pat's: per alcune serate, chjediamo una tariffa di L$500. Ammonterebbe a due dollari americani, una cifra esigua, e diffatti chiamiamo l'iniziativa 2bucks. La prima prova è stata il mese scorso, ed erano presenti 48 persone - una vera folla per un evento musicale live in SL: prova che il pubblico è pronto a fare la sua parte per sostenere la musica e gli artisti del metaverso. Per me il migliore artista jazz in SL in questo momento sarebbe... una mia cliente... bravissima e ricercatissima, Ankari Holder: è vocalista, e fa concerti un po' dapperttutto - clicca qui per vedere la sua programma di eventi su MySpace.
