Meet Russell Eponym, in RL Russell Taylor Ashby. He's one of SL's most ubiquitous and charming musicians, I first came across Russell at the opening of a new dance venue - a very friendly one, I may add, The Barn. There's something about Russell that makes you want to be his friend, his open friendliness; in the shifting sands of SL identities, he is simply himself. He plays acoustic guitar and harmonica, an acoustic mix of contemporary folk and blues. Listen to him here! With Russell, it's a live performance (none of that naughty pre-recorded stuff) and lots of gentle humour and warm banter, English style. Here's a picture of him at the opening of another really nice SL music venue, The Old Barn. I asked Russell who his greatest influences are.
Russell Eponym: Well, I have been playing and singing since I was a teenager - my earliest influences were folk music, both English and European, and I play the mandolin and the banjo, as well as the guitar. I also play the harmonica which sometimes surprises the audience! Depending on the event, I sometimes play country blues and ragtime style, as well as my own compositions. The artists I cover the most are Bob Dylan, Mark Knopfler, James Taylor and Donovan, but other musicians who have influenced me a lot include Davy Graham, Bert Jansch, and John Renbourne.

I wondered how Russell came to SL, and what it means to be a musician here.
Russell Eponym: In RL, I was an English professor and later in my educational career, I was a Principal of a High School in England. I have always been a RL musician and have played for many ensembles, duos and bands over the years. These have embraced many genres; folk, pop, blues, jazz, punk, and I've been a street singer in London, Paris and Vienna. I left England in 2005 to be with a lady I had met on the internet and shortly after arriving, I was told about Second Life. I had been performing on the internet for several years in a programme called 'Paltalk' but I had never experienced anything quite like Second Life for sound quality. In January 2006, I entered SL and, bemused and confused by this whole new world, I set about to find my first opportunites to play live music. My first ever performances were small shared events with friends, they were very informal, but always fun, which is what has kept me in SL - the fun and the friendships I have found here.
I encouraged other musician friends from Paltalk to come into Second Life. My first hearing of the sound quality convinced me that this was the best place to be playing live music in the internet.
So where, I asked Russell, are the best places to play in SL?
Russell Eponym: There are so many places! But to give you an idea of the scope and variety of music venues my top six would have to be these:
Sternberg Schloss Rotunda is elegant and peaceful; it's a reconstruction of a RL Palace in Wiesbaden Biebrich Germany, and encourages a 'listening audience' because of its seating arrangement. It resembles a recital room. Supports original and authentic music: I play here on Tuesdays.
Guthries encourages acoustic/folk music, so it's a special place for me. I really like the excellent audiences Guthries attracts, and I always have fun playing there, and you can count on a regular audience which makes my job all the more fun.
Cuddlers Cove is a beach hangout for lovers, as the name suggests! There are lots of regulars here also, so it's a wonderful place to play for me.
Red Rock is a very distinctive music venue, well worth a visit if you haven't been yet, I'm generally here on Wednesdays after my gig at the Luxor.

Sterling Vineyard always has an excellent variety of musicians and is a very romantic nature-themed park.
Luxor is another club with a most elegant design, and boasts very knowledgeable audiences.

Enough variety and good humour to make me wanna be a groupie!

Ecco Russell Eponym all'anagrafe Russell Taylor Ashby musicista inglese e metaversale. L'ho conosciuto per la prima volta all'inaugurazione de The Old Barn, un locale country-folk molto bello e accogliente. Russell è una persona did rara gentilezza e franchezza senza dramma, non dato ai soliti giochi e bugie inutili, è se stesso non ha bisogna di essere altro. Suona la chitarra, il mandolino, il banjo, e l'armonica. Di professione - il lavoro 'di giorno' diciamo - è insegnante, anzi è stato per diversi anni preside d'un liceo in inghilterra. Ma la sua vera passione è sempre stata la musica, e ha passato molti estati girando per l'europa una specie di menestrello itinerante a Londra, Parigi e Vienna. Dal 2005 si trova negli Stati Uniti; Russell è arrivato qui grazie a una storia d'amore nata in internet con una americana. Ha conosciuto molti musicisti online grazie al sito Paltalk, ed è entrato in SL nel 2006 - dopo i primi momenti di disagio e confusione (quelli l'abbiamo passati un po' tutti, credo) si è innamorato del metaverso, quasi subito ha cominciato a esibirsi - iniziando con piccole serate informale per gli amici. In poco tempo ha capito di trovarsi a casa... per non uscirne più! Infatti è stato molto attivo nel invitare altri musicisti di Paltalk di provare Second Life, la ricca esperienza totale di un performance live in SL, dice Russell, non la si trova su altri piattaformi virtuali. I suoi idoli sono Mark Knopfler, Bob Dylan, Donovan, e James Taylor, e ci regala la sua versione delle loro canzoni ma anche molte composizioni originali. Inoltre, Davy Graham, Bert Jansch, e John Renbourne gli hanno influiti moltissimo. Folk e blues contemporanea sono i generi che suona di solito in SL, ama molto le melodie tradizionali inglesi e celtiche, e anche quelli americane che in fatti sono evolute dalle canzoni portati oltreoceano insieme ai primi speranzosi pionieri che si sono reinventati nelle foreste e le pianure del Nuovo Mondo. Il mio notecard ti darà i nomi di tutti i locali dove ho suonato e suono regolarmente, ma per darti un'idea della scelta e la varietà in SL, ecco sei sim che mi piacciono in modo particolare:

Sternberg Schloss Rotunda è elegante piacevole e tranquillo, è la ricostruzione di una reggia reale a Wiesbaden Biebrich Germania. La Schloss metaversale invita un pubblico formale, ci sono dei posti a sedere, come una sala da concerto, il sim incoraggia musica originale e autentica, per questo mi piace moltissimo e di solito mi troverai qui il martedì sera.

Guthries è un altro posto molto bello, all'insegna della musica folk degli stati uniti e anche quella tradizionale inglese. Puoi ben capire che per me è un posto molto speciale, non solo per il genere di musica ma anche per il pubblico molto fedele. Mi diverto moltissimo suonare qui!
Luxor è un altro locale a me molto caro. La costruzione del sim è molto elegante ed è frequentato da un pubbblico molto informato in questione di musica folk.

Red Rock - un sim molto particolare, vale la pena visitarla non solo per le serate musicali. Mi esibisco qui di solito il mercoledì dopo il Luxor.

Cuddlers Cove come indica il nome è una spiaggia per gli innamorati virtuali, ma anche molti ascotatori e amici che frequentano spesso il Cove, e mi piace suonare qui tra gli amici.

Sterling Vineyard è un sim bellissimo, un vigneto con uno stile tutto suo, all'insegna dell'amore e la natura. Qui troverai musicisti di ogni genere. Ecco una foto, di Sterling, scattata stasera, quando sono passata da sola, davvero suggestivo e bello come sim, penso dev'essere un posto molto romantico, specialmente quando c'è anche la buona musica e un po' di gente. Se ti piace la buona musica e qualche risata, in compagnia di un pubblico tranquillo e gentile, non potresti fare di meglio di cercare Russell, qui o altrove. E chissà, forse ci vedremo lì. Se canta Mark Knopfler, ci puoi contare.
