There ain't nothing like the real thing, baby... and when I say 'real', I mean a factory-made virtual Gibson - here in Second Life... for free! The famous guitar manufacturer, purveyor of instruments to such musical legends as ...well, pretty much all of them, came to SL in June to their very own Gibson Island . You don't have to wait for it to be a Cleveland afternoon to take a trip, maybe with some friends, to the Gibson Radio station, where you can cut some vinyl in their recording studio, you can watch podcasts of Brent Mason, Duane Eddy and others as they discuss their life and work with Gibson guitars. Topographiles, on the wall in the radio office, you'll see the original design for the sim by Tony Gerber, it's in the shape of (what else?) a guitar. Tour the island on one of the bright red tram tracks that run on guitar frets... between the cam and the mouselook, it's a slightly psychadelic experience, ding ding. Inside the golden Gibson Labs you'll see ads for all the great guitars onscreen lively, up close and personal... yeah I can see your RL air guitar getting a workout in here. But no need for such virtual vibes in Second Life... there are free copies of Gibson's finest instruments everywhere, and even a guitar bag, so you can carry your treasure on your back, when you're not playing. You can pick up a junior ampliifier too, built by cypress Rosewood, who's also a musician, hybrid elf/dragon/american indian and kaleidoscope maker. So, just your average Joe, then. Pick up your complimentary tee shirt - featuring a variety of great Gibson guitars, and once you're dressed appropriately, there are also guitar-shaped chairs stools and tables for your home. Walk a little further, past the giant amplifier, you'll come to the Acoustic stage there's a competition to win a real guitar, an EF 500RA (sounds serious) offered by Von Johin. The event is coming 'in August' the poster said so TP over soon to check that out. The Acoustic stage has a picnicky theme, got the feeling that like Pete Townshend, someone was Thinkin' 'bout a sunny barbeque"...

Next door to the Acoustic Stage is the Wurlitzer Diner, I waited for some fries to go with my customary shake, and checked out the pictures on Gibson's Jukebox website. They're genuine works of art in mechanical music.
You can also TP up to Planet Gibson for music with stars. You can see a picture down in the Italian part. There's a theater with an impressive menu of videos - the making of Gibson guitars, and an interview with Paul McCartney among others - I couldn't get the films to work, but the titles sounded good enough for me to try again soon.

Walk down the train tracks a little, and you'll come to the other theater: it has 4 booths showing vintage musicians like T Bone Walker and Howlin' Wolf - worked just fine and a lot of fun. I watched together with Aloisio Congrego and Lindsay Apfelbaum. I asked Lindsay why she'd come to Gibson Island.

Lindsay Apfelbaum: I love playing the guitar.... I'm waiting for Xmas to buy a Les Paul. I think Gibson is the best, that's it basically. I play rock pop... but I'm a beginner, I started only months ago. This place is like a Museum, but I love the fact you can get exact copies of real Gibson guitars, although obviously you can't play them.

I wondered as we took a ride around the island if she would like to attend - maybe one day even play, Gibson Island, but she was unconvinced.
Lindsay Apfelbaum: No, I haven't been to any of the concerts... My computer wouldn't stand such fuss it's very slow. I wouldn't perform in here, it would be nonsense, you can't really play on SL.

I have to disagree. Music in SL is getting better and better, and Gibson Island - a musical arts park if ever I saw one - has regular and diverse concerts on the various stages. If you don't believe me, be there on Ambient Sunday, August 24th at Gibson Planet. See you in the crowd!

Se si parla di 'musica moderna' e 'opere d'arte' tu a che cosa pensi ? Io a una chitarra Gibson, lo Stradivario del rock and roll. E ora tu puoi averne quanto ne vuoi, se fai una visita all' isola Gibson, un'iniziativa della famosa ditta americana. Il sim è stato inaugurato a giugno e troverai qui tantissime cose da vedere - sopratutto video da guardare, ma anche articoli gratuiti a ambienti divertenti come ad esempio Gibson Radio la sede della stazione radio e qualcosa in più... si puo' fare un bel gioco di ruolo dentro lo studio recitando la parte dell'artista 'incompreso' o il genio di mixaggio ...forse sarai ispirato a scrivere una canzone, oppure semplicemente a godere podcast di Duane Eddy e Brent Mason. Per chi ama la topografia virtuale, qui troverai anche un quadro dell'isola nella versione ideata da Tony Gerber.

Qui a Gibson Island ci sono molti teatrini qui regna il media, ho visto vari video, quelli nel Gibson Lab sono piccoli spot pubblicitari per le chitarre famose. C'è un cinema, cliccare sullo schermo per vedere un menù completo di mini documentari, tra i titoli "Come si costruisce una Gibson" e un'intervista con Paul McCartney. Purtoppo per me questi video non funzionavano, ma niente paura, in un altro tunnel sotto l'isola ho trovato quattro bellissimi filmati d'epoca, insieme ad alcune bellissime chitarre come questa creata per festeggiare il 50esimo anniversario di Gibson. Se fai una passeggiata giù per la parte bassa dell'isola troverai il palco dedicato alle chitarre acoustiche, ti ricordera' forse le parole della canzone di Pete Townsend: Sheraton Gibson dove parla della nostalgia per casa sua e il ricordo di un bel barbecue domenicale... e parlando di hot dog e hamburger, un po' più avanti troverai il Wurlitzer Diner (nella foto di sopra) interessante per i Jukebox. Pare che la famosa marca Wurlitzer appartiene ora alla ditta Gibson. Il bel sito-vetrina dove consente la visione di vere e proprie opere d'are della musica meccanica.

Se ti fanno male i piedi, puoi fare il giro dell'isola col tram rosso, come ho fatto io in compagnia con Lindsay Apfelbaum. Prova a fare una foto, anche tu, mentre sei 'in transit' l'esperienza è da non perdere. Lyndsay si trovava a Gibson Island perché è appassionata della chitarra, infatti aveva deciso di farsi comprare una Les Paul a natale. Le ho chiesto che tipo di musica le piace.

Lyndsay Apfelbaum: Rock pop è il mio genere preferito. Ma sono principiante, faccio lezioni da pochi mesi. Per me la Gibson è semplicemente la marca migliore, tutto qui. Mi piace questo posto, anche se sembra un museo, perché ci sono le chitarre freebies, è una sorta di anteprima per me, anche se naturalmente queste non si possono suonare.

Le piacerebbe sentire un concerto qui, o chissà un giorno esibirsi qui in SL?

Lyndsay Apfelbaum: no, non sono stata ad un concerto, e non credo che ci andrei, il mio PC non ce la farebbe... ed io non mi esibisco qui, sarebbe assurdo. Non si può suonare in SL.

Non sono d'accordo. Per me la muscia e una parte integrale della vita artistica di Second Life, ora piu' che mai. Qui a Gibson island ci sono concerti quasi tutti i giorni, e domenica 24 agosto nel Gibson Planet, il teatro nel cielo, c'è un concerto speciale per Ambient Day la giornata dell'ambiente... vediamoci tra le stelle!
