Jewel of the East

The city of Ravenna, on Italy's east coast, is where Dante's tomb is located, but much more than that too - it's a magnificent pastiche of Roman, Byzantine, and Italian architecture; not surprisingly, like nearby Venice, it's a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The streets throng with bicycles, it is as flat and pedal-friendly here as any Dutch city. The sun rises over the Adriatic illuminating ancient stones in the city centre and the massive modern structures of its great seaport, busy at all hours with ships from around the world. This is the RL world of Kaji Jewell, and his photography exhibition, some twenty or so pictures in the sky gallery at Tanalois is not to be missed.
The first thing I wanted to know was... what's with the beard. It's an echo of his RL appearance, Kaji told me. I think it makes him look like an old sea dog, perhaps you agree. Each photo is accompanied by a notecard that explains what Kaji was thinking about when he took the picture. As he pointed out, the act of capturing an image on its own was not quite enough, he also wanted to make a record of the emotions and thoughts that motivated the choice to take the photograph. Of course, our reactions as bystanders may not coincide with the opinions or feelings he espresses ands this too creates a pleasing asymmetry. He muses on the nature of race in Italy, on his regional identity and on the city monuments themselves, the changes and the conflicts they have witnessed. Above all, he invites us into a world at once public and private, sharing a corner of Italy that many of us may never get the chance to visit for ourselves.
Kaji began taking photos about a year ago in Ravenna and the nearby villages. The stunning photograph of a bronze statue, for example, comes from the countryside of the Romagna and is accompanied by a poem that speaks to belief in the face of change and disappointment. This is the first time he has exhibited his work anywhere, and he told me he finds it exhilarating to be able to share his work with people from all over the world in a virtual and intimate setting. The pleasure of exhibiting makes him want to work harder, produce more pictures and words, and he commented also on his feelings of pride at being able to do credit to the gallery owners of Tanalois, Aloisio Congrego and Tani Thor for their hospitality. "In SL we have the unique opportunity to really only deal with the people we want to deal with, unlike real life where we're often put in a position of zero choice in that aspect of life. One of the great joys of the metaverse is to be able to show mutual appreciation for like-minded people."

danzando ci vengono in contro. Ci travolgeranno o ci
accompagneranno.
Domanda o risposta.
