Incontiguity

Sorry, I got distracted by Other Stuff...
Anyway, here's Feathers Boa the very fine and sensitive artist whose work you see all over the metaverse. On Facebook, she posted a note to say she is leaving the Caerleon Sims after being there for two years, not to mention being one of the founding artists over there: such a happy interaction coming to an end. Turns out it's all to do with the new adult continent Zindra. "Read the blogs, it's all over the blogs," she said.
Hmm, there were all kinds of well heeled people whining about tier and protected land and prim counts and I get enough of that sort of talk in RL, however, one can see why Feathers is so frustrated by the changes happening. It seems the new continent will be a sort of 'naughty ghetto' where all the adult-themed builds will be located, and access will be limited to those who have provided age-verification information to LL. As a newbie that kind of thing scared me, but now it's that anyone might think me too young to see rude bits, plus if you've been to Battery Street, or eaten lunch at at Il Fornaio mmm at a table next to a bunch of LL geeks, you'll be aware they're out to evilly control the world, not even the metaworld. Having said that, with the incredible detail of textures and graphics now available in SL, I can see why artists like Feathers are concerned that their photo-realistic expressions of the human form are going to get swept into the Zindra continent, in what amounts to artistic censorship. it would be horrible not see Feathers' lovely handiwork all over SL any more. As for the raw and deeply emotive expressions of some of the toughest moments in her life, like the ones curently on show at the Forbidden Feathers exhibit, well, they'll be worth making the trip to Zindra to see. For now you can TP to her Gallery and see for yourself this genuinely moving material.
Protection and censorship, that's too big and RL for me...
And now for something completely different: Aquila Faulds says that on Tuesday June 30 at 10 pm Italian time (that's 1 pm SLT) they're having a Vishudda at the Virtual Gallery at Merkaba Arts. It involves a choral embrace and new age music. Google chakra on your own dime. Laragrace Rau and Aquila Faulds' art is always worth a view and if you like Italians, and dream dancing also, showing up might be the beginning of something new and exciting.
Another event you might like to be a part of is the poetry competition at Agora Saturnia. It's a joint venture of L'ARME D'AMOUR and Teo Porta's group, Italiani di SL contro la caccia. In light of the Cheyenne Cherry story it seems a particularly good cause to support right now. If you can write in Italian, sign up by getting in touch with Viola Tatham before 10 July 2009. Poems must be original, unpublished, in Italian and no longer than 21 lines and on a theme related to animals and animal welfare, the jury on July 17 will award L4000, L3000, and L2000 to the first second and third placed winners respectively. You can contact Viola or torno Kohime of Agora Saturnia for more details.
Here lastly, is a video of the King Tut exhibit. If you didn't go yet you should hurry over there to King's Rezzable. As a good friend commented when we visited together, it's not good. It's meraviglioso. See the Rezzable website for more.

Mettiamoci all'opera subito.

Virtual prisoner

[5:28] Hostile Welcome Mat v2.5 - Village Edition : Thirza Ember is declared unmutual!!!
Number 6: Where am I?
Number 2: In the Village.
Number 6: What do you want?
Number 2: Information.
Number 6: Whose side are you on?
Number 2: That would be telling. We want information. Information. Information!
Number 6: You won't get it.
Number 2: By hook or by crook, we will.
Number 6: Who are you?
Number 2: The new Number 2.
Number 6: Who is Number 1?
Number 2: You are Number 6.
Number 6: I am not a number – I am a free man!

Several lifetimes ago, when I lived in Wales, I went on a road trip with some really annoying people. We saw a number of castles and more trees than you could shake a stick at, but after what seemed an eternity we arrived at a small village I had never heard of before, called Portmeirion.
I fell in love. Not just with the fact I could get out of the car and stretch my legs and actually hear something that wasn't the other lady in the party describing lady-problems that none of us wanted to know about, I was entranced by the valley, the view of the sea, the Irish sea, and the lovely houses, the narrow streets, like a theme park but without the rides or the children throwing up. Eventually, having escaped my captors, I found myself close to the little harbour and a small house marked "The Prisoner. If you don't know about the TV show from the 1960's please do not enter. This area is for fans only. "
A secret agent attempts to leave behind him a life of lies, danger and espionage, and finds himself imprisoned in a surreal village where all around him is a sinister and surreal masquerade and... well, let me shut up. Here's a video to give you the idea. The show has a mystical poetry of its own, here's Patrick McGoohan, the star, creator and director, sort of explaining it in 1977. The idea of a pretend village hosting a TV show, and both surviving the ravages of time, this I liked, and how nice to find a thriving celebration of both, here in our ever changing metaverse.
The big screen remake of the show comes out soon, Ian McKellen is in it, here is a trailer.
The Village or Portmeirion, however you choose to call it, has lots to see and to do, there are competitions going on all the time: treasure hunts, shooting competitions, and more all marked on the Google calendar in the square. At the Town Hall Theatre, experience regular reading events by Huckleberry Hax, Gracee Andel, and Catty herself. You can visit the Palace of Fun, the shops on Chantry Row, Trinity Marketplace, the Hotel and the Dock, where you'll find chess, backgammon, and a pennyfarthing tour of the island, get your mind bent in the Castle Hospital or indulge in some trivia, free paintball, or karaoke at the Cat and Mouse next door.
RL Portmeirion is famous for its floral pottery, and SL Portmeirion has some lovely little stores dotted around the place too - don't miss them.
I asked Catty Erde why she'd chosen this theme.

Catty Erde: The Prisoner is a gift in terms of SL. The show centres around an international community, and I felt this was a good thing to explore in SL - and so far a lot of people agree, we have two groups, I am not a Number and Unmutual - with more than a thousand members in places like China, Japan, India, Saudi Arabia, as well as most European countries. I wanted to put together something that encompassed community development, arts, discussion, and contests, and 'The Village' from The Prisoner is ideal for that. The show used a lot of gadgets which were advanced for the time, and now are not so hard to script in lsl, so that makes it fun. It's the first sim I have built. We opened version one of The Village on July 31st last year on 3 openspace and moved here in November, and this is the second revision.
I wondered what Catty has planned for the future - turns out to be plenty.
Catty Erde: The Theatre is still in the early stages. We have poetry, story readings and debating events at the moment - again we would like to build on this, but Voice events are hard to get going in SL, as a lot of people love to chat but not to speak! We plan to build on this element as the sim develops. We also have a sim stream of voices from the group which will be put up at the Palace of Fun soon, and probably also stream from the Website too. I would like to build the new village with more features when the new series comes out, and we are still working on the game which will be central to the sim, and we hope to open this in the next three months.
Sounds like a good place to visit, an even better place to stay... hmm, now I just need to find me a nice Patrick McGoohan lookalike. Hmmm... how hard could that be?

C'è la Palace of Fun, negozi a Chantry Row, e Trinity Marketplace. All' Hotel puoi giocare a scacchi, backgammon, o fare un giro dell'isola in bicicletta.

Alda Merini
There are very few serious literary groups among the Italian denizens of our fair metaverse, certainly nothing on the scale or wonder of Inksters, Bookstacks, the Guild, or our friends at Caledon. But not all is lost for italophiles. .. the rest of the post is in that language. Alda Merini is a force of nature and one of Italy's most important living poets. Here's a little taste of her in translation, and see you back here for a full post in English very shortly.

Mi piacciono molto i suoi orrecchini turchesi!

mia dolce chiara bella creatura,
mia vita e morte,
mia trionfale e aperta poesia
che mi scagli al profondo
perché ti dia le risonanze nuove.
E se torno dal chiuso dell'inferno
torno perché tu sei la primavera:
perché dunque rifiuti me germoglio,

French Quickie

I'll be brief....

Vernissage is a nice word, don't you think? Try saying it out loud right now, let's see who you startle. From the French for varnishing, in the art world it means a preview or opening of an exhibition, and it has a satisfying sense of both finality and new beginnings to it: the work is done, sealed with a layer of gloss, and ready to be presented to the world. Last night there was a vernissage at the PiRats sim Second France, the invitation from Merlina Rokocoko was too tempting to miss. As usual, Merlina, Newbab the team at PiRats have put together an eclectic but complementary exhibition from around the globe. The building is itself a treat for the eyes, simple sweeping lines frame the art without overpowering it.

The show is laid out over three floors, you can TP up and down or take the stairs, there's plenty to catch the eye. I loved les ste maries by cocool Tracey, and, upstairs there were some great pieces by Shellina Winkler, I also enjoyed the purple indelible scars and at the end, lots of red moving parts, both by Maryva Mayo. On the whole though, if I'm honest, I'm more of a fan of figurative than abstract sculpture, especially anything that brings RL into SL, which is why I very much enjoyed the monumental statuary of Ub Yifu, here's a sample, from which you easily can see why you'll be seeing him again in this blog. Speaking of the exciting intersection between RL and SL art brings us to Michelangelo Montague, whose work invites one to get up close and personal with such seminal pieces of manipulated americana as Harlem Nightclub 1949, Train Wreck, and Sunday afternoon on 5th street, 1910. If you're new to SL, or would like to widen your circle of friends on an international level, the regular vernissages at PiRats are the perfect place to branch out, the atmosphere is always friendly, conducive to the making of new contacts. No stuffy snobbery here, and there's always champagne on offer!

Grim's Tails

Not that I'm one for name dropping, but Oh yeah, Oh yeah, that's me 'n' the late great Roy Scheider, on the deck of the Orca. What's that, Roy? You think we're going to need a bigger boat?
Here I am on me holidays on Amity Island, I decided to come early and miss the 4th of July crowds, not to mention the fact that July is a Bad Time for swimmers in these parts. Amity is, of course, a tribute to the Steven Spielberg classic Jaws, one of the finest fish films of all time. Steven Spielberg was just 27 (ooo the same age as you and me!) when he co-wrote and directed this low(ish)-budget masterpiece shot on location on Martha's Vineyard, off the coast of Massachusetts (thankyou spellcheck). Many of the townspeople in the film were actual Vineyard residents, including the lady whose son dies, you remember, the one who gives Roy Scheider that slap across the face. That's my favourite bit. I have issues. The mechanical shark (named Bruce, after Spielberg's lawyer, Bruce Ramen) broke down countless times. This severely limited the opportunities to film it in action, but had the collateral effect of producing box-office breaking suspense back in 1975 and, I think you'll agree, some sharp intaking of breath even today.
The sim is by Grim and Nita Bracken and I love it. There are shops including Grimworx (they specialize in all things gothic horror, including collectables and custom interactive monsters - I want one!!!) and Serenade, a photographer's paradise. Also a mermaid hangout, which I didn't see, well, not yet, I will have to go back... I originally TP'd in here to see Second Cinema, which is a real cinema, where you can watch real films and virtually eat free popcorn. I don't know what this film was, mostly because I was too lazy to open the link to the cinema's perfectly legible online schedule. Anyway it was some sort of horror film, possibly Dreamscape. It was night when I first arrived, so I thought this was all the sim had to offer, and walked out a little disappointed, though I did like the posters on the walls - free copies are available, which is a nice touch. I've always loved movie poster art, and since I'm redoing my place I had a good rummage in the Braken's impressive collection, mostly from the 70's onwards, you know, Raiders of the Lost Ark, Close Encounters ... getting a Spielberg theme here...Outside the movie theatre I found the Drive In, it was unoccupied the first time I passed through, but that must have been a fluke I've been back a dozen times and never found the sim empty again, and not your usual newbies either all kinds of people are drawn here to watch a little bit of film in good company, or to take the rides. Speaking of rides, lots 50's convertibles and pickups, all of them cherry, of course. The Q on the wall is a reminder you have to get Quicktime to be able to watch the movies, it's worth it, I saw a bit of Star Trek V The Final Frontier in a pink soft-top, since for reasons of personal dorkiness I still have not had a chance to see the new Star Trek film in RL, I thought it would do me good to take a trip back to a time when a corset and a toupee were sufficient to make Kirk a younger man. It did. I ended up sharing the front seat with a dude named Chris something, "-Call me Dave-" who made some funny jokes about the film and then borrowed 20L off me. It's that kind of place.
When you're tired of watching the films, turn the sun back on and go for a walk. If you go downtown, you'll find Quint (Robert Shaw) scowling in the square. Apparently Shaw decided to spend the whole Martha's Vineyard shoot in character, whether because he was a method actor or simply PO'd at the confusion that surrounded the making of the film, it's hard to say. Here is a Robert Shaw bit from the film. There's lots more to do on Amity, you can sunbathe, or go windsurfing, or on the Bumper Boats, if you dare. There's a nice Ferris wheel too, you'll find a pic down in the Italian bit, just make sure you sit down in one of the gondolas before you press the signboard in front of the ticket office!
Immersiva builder Merlino Mayo took a break from scripting and joined me at the Bumper Cars at the other end of the Boardwalk, which was a hoot even though a very uneven contest, I blame my teeny tiny graphics card. I explained about the theme of the sim and he flew over to take a look at the Orca himself. Merlino was in a reduced sized avatar (actually, he was a milk carton when he showed up) which was appropriate because in the movie they filmed Hooper's anti-shark cage scenes using a Little Person in a scaled-down cage, to make the real life shark look bigger. I may have spoilt the effect... There's a gypsy swim ball on the shore and I couldn't resist. Whether you're in the mood for some quiet movie magic, or want somewhere new to take a stroll, or a date, head over to Amity Island. Don't forget to send me a postcard!

Rezzurrection

May thy Ka live! Mayest thou spend millions of years,
Oh thou who lovest Thebes,
seated with thy face turned to the north
and thine eyes contemplating felicity.

Inscription on the tomb of Tutankhamun

It was the kind of Egyptian outing you could only find in Second Life, me dressed for an English garden party, a person in a Pompadour wig, and a couple of ladies sporting horse tails, one of them heavily pregnant. The style mashup met at the landing spot of the new King Tut exhibit at King's Rezzable. The Tut show is actually still at the preview stage, who knows what more goodies the good folk of Rezzable.com have up their sleeves. To say the balloon part was my favourite bit really doesn't give the rest the credit it deserves, but as you can maybe partially tell from these pictures, it is breathtaking. You click on the balloon to ride above the curve of the world, with Egypt directly below you. The view changes from a satellite view, to an atlas, the kind of thing perhaps Howard Carter drooled over as a small boy; in turn the atlas gives way to a map showing the surprisingly large scope and layout of the ancient burial grounds. I'm not making myself clear, you have to go and see yourself. The aerial view is however not even among the four attractions advertized at the landing point. Among the names that deserve mentioning are world-renowned photographer Sandro Vannini, whose photos of the artefacts (check out his book Omaggio all'Egitto) form the backbone of the sim's textures. No less noteworthy Alejandro Rosenthal one of the scripters, who kindly posed for a photo for this post which my puppy ate, also My Mackenzie, Beatrix Newt, as well as technical advisor and builder Foolish Frost, whose profile mentions an 'avatar song' I intend to get to the bottom of at my earliest convenience. Littletoe Bartlet "I traded a cow for a handful of magic beans" and partner Pavig Lok complete my roll of honour though I am sure others had more than a hand in the making, apologies to any left out.
The King Tut exhibit has been in the works for over a year and although it isn't quite finished - Alejandro was making some repairs when I ran into him - it is one of the best assembled tours you'll take in SL. The notecard belonging to the exhibit says: "We believe that the online, 3D, immersive environment can be an amazing way to experience the ancient world. Explore time and place. See amazing details from stunning artefacts. Enjoy this unique experience with friends and archeology experts." Which is what I'm doing now.

Once I was done cooing over the balloon, I tp'd down to the 'excavations' which recreate a sort of 1920's atmosphere with little white tents that make you think Lord Caernarvon just stepped away for a moment to do something patronizing among the palm trees, and will be back any moment to say hello. Enter the tomb (there's even an iron gate, which thank goodness opens, and you will see some of the gold funerary items that first met Carter's gaze, eliciting that famous diary entry: "With trembling hands I made a tiny breach in the upper left hand corner . . . widening the hole a little I inserted the candle and peered in . . . at first I could see nothing, the hot air escaping from the chamber causing the candle to flicker. Presently details of the room emerged slowly from the mist, strange animals, statues and gold - everywhere the glint of gold." The 3D items on show include a chariot and chairs, there's a photo in the Italian bit... worth noting that the builders haven't let the joy of prims get the upper hand here, there are enough items to give a sense of wonder, without producing a whole load of counterproductive lag. I like the wall paintings from the tomb site, of a crisp unmissable beauty. Also, one wall is all monkeys: say no to that, if you dare. Next stop is the Special Pieces Gallery, which is special in its own right, a wonderfully intuitive and stylish design. The main chamber holds the two gigantic gilded shrines that originally held Tut's mummy, while the side rooms hold copies of tinier but equally impressive pieces from the treasury. Cam in tight to see the exquisite workmanship, ancient and modern, or press the Enlarge button and see the objects in extraordinary detail.

A third chamber houses 'King Tut' himself, the familiar funeral mask in context, a boy in his tomb, all the gold and glory in the world no consolation for the cold smallness of death. As I passed my cursor over the funeral mask, I noticed that Alejandro's name came up: odd, I thought, I know he's a scripter, not a texture guy. So I clicked on the mummy and wonder of wonders, it opened up before my eyes! ...you guessed it, the picture is in the Italian bit. I'm telling you, you have to go see this place it is very cool. I should also mention that throughout you can click to listen to audio commentary, along with some beautiful music. Breaking away from the subterranean, I used the TP to go up to the Cosmic Gallery. Here Egyptian artefacts fill the night sky. Either cam out to see the pieces, or walk down the nebulous helix (yes, it is a walkway, trust me) to view pieces in person. Finally, on ground level is the Amarna house and an interesting shopping area - this should be your first stop if you're the kind of tourist who likes to look epoch-apropriate while getting your dose of world-class culture.
It's that time of year where so many of us are getting a little monitor-weary, with good reason. Time, then, to contemplate some felicity. Perhaps a visit to King Tut - and the energizing website of rezzable.com, with over 30 sims dedicated to entertainment and exploration, not to mention a mighty presence on Youtube, twitter, and flickr - may be just what it takes to breathe new life into your love of SL.
*******

Caro chi legge

Thomas Mann's best bit, on Michelangelo.

coma fa l'acqua a' gatti in Lombardia
o ver d'altro paese che si sia,
c'a forza 'l ventre appicca sotto 'l mento.
in sullo scrigno, e 'l petto fo d'arpia,
e 'l pennel sopra 'l viso tuttavia
mel fa, gocciando, un ricco pavimento.
E' lombi entrati mi son nella peccia,
e fo del cul per contrapeso groppa,
e ' passi senza gli occhi muovo invano.
Dinanzi mi s'allunga la corteccia,
e per piegarsi adietro si ragroppa,
e tendomi com'arco sorïano.
Però fallace e strano
surge il iudizio che la mente porta,
ché mal si tra' per cerbottana torta.
La mia pittura morta
difendi orma', Giovanni, e 'l mio onore,

O notte, o dolce tempo, benché nero,
con pace ogn' opra sempr' al fin assalta;
ben vede e ben intende chi t'esalta,
e chi t'onor' ha l'intelletto intero.
Tu mozzi e tronchi ogni stanco pensiero;
ché l'umid' ombra ogni quiet' appalta,
e dall'infima parte alla più alta
in sogno spesso porti, ov'ire spero.
ultimo delli afflitti e buon rimedio;
tu rendi sana nostra carn' inferma,
rasciughi i pianti e posi ogni fatica,
e furi a chi ben vive ogn'ira e tedio.

Miss Collegiality

A single event can awaken within us a stranger totally unknown. To live is to be
slowly born.
Antoine Saint-Exupéry, Flight to Arras
Does it really matter where you're born in SL? My memories of those first few heady weeks - they seemed like years, so much to do and know and mess up - are vivid in parts: I remember getting a nice new skin that mysteriously developed the word demo across the face, it took me days to understand what had happened and how to put it right, mostly because I've a genetic predisposition to not reading signs, at least not properly. Born where? I remember a rather uncongenial island, with loads of information that seemed beyond my pay grade about building and textures. A non-place straight out of Marc Auge's playbook if ever there was one. There was a volcano, I recall, you were supposed to get a password from a monster and repeat it to some sort of Hawaiian god when you got to the crater, I didn't find the god, and when I gave up and moved on to the next task, flight school, I drove around and around looking for - now I come to think of it, I imagine I was looking for some sort of airfield... and only after an age and many mishaps with the car, (sadly my poor motoring skills are not limited to SL) I finally realized that the big signs saying FLIGHT SCHOOL meant that the flight school was inside the building. I've been back, of course, to build other avatars, but never hung around to learn how one should do things properly. It seems I'm not alone; pretty much everyone I have asked has only vague memories of the coming-into-world experience, and they involve being propositioned or ignored in such uninspiring places as Dore's Welcome Area and the eternal malls of Argabuthnon, where one can grow old shopping for freebies. And camping of course, although I understand camping is something of a dead art nowadays.
This picture shows where a lot of Italians came into the world, at Never Land. We're talking about noobs born first and foremost in order to attend a virtual conference on politics. Two Italian TV personalities and political activists Beppe Grillo and Antonio di Pietro used SL as a platform for a lot of inconclusive speechifying - they have since returned from whence they came, which is a huge shame but not a huge surprise. The place is pretty much abandoned these days, and appears to be for sale but this hill was, for many Italian residents, the first thing they really saw in Second Life. Down below you can see a picture of the classically themed meeting area, the slogans calling for change, honesty and social justice still waving, lonely in the meta-air.
What got me thinking about where I was born? I came across Caledon Oxbridge. I was walking the sims of Caledon, it's always such an inspiring and restful place to visit, and I saw in the distance some dreaming spires. I'd recently been over to the University of Princeton's sim, mentioned a few posts back, it's full of literary, archeological and art collections; I assumed this was the English equivalent, that somehow Cambridge and Oxford Universities had bee persuaded to open a sim together under the auspices of the Guvnah Desmond Shang. I was quite wrong. It is instead a community gateway, and one of the most charming in all SL, I think. The buildings are all in the Oxbridge style, with halls full of posters explaining how to walk, fly, dress, communicate and all the rest. There is of course a strong steampunk element to the look of the place, there's a pretty impressive railway system running through the sim, so that new residents and old can find their way around with a total visual experience very handy for getting your bearings. There are of course also plenty of Teleports, like this one, complete with New Resident. Don't laugh, we've all been there. Well maybe not the green ensemble. I tried to explain stop all animations to him, but he tp'd away.
Anyone who wishes to come into SL at Caledon can join the group and make use of the free rooms or 'Residence Halls' in the scholarly jargon of the place. A group member can rez 84 objects in their room, and receives a complimentary pack of furniture: they can set the campus as their Home, too, right from the start. I think I was in SL for a year before I had a Home tp set. The architecture here (ah you know I'm always on my pilgrimage) is mostly by Desmond Magic - I'm guessing a pseudonym for the Great Benefactor - but among the other talent on display here is the work of Karl Metropolitan, and JJ Drinkwater, responsible for the Library Rotunda, you'll see the library, complete with white shirted noob, in the Italian bit. As you can see from this picture the posters at Oxbridge aren't just informative, they are beautifully and imaginatively produced, this apple-filled notice explains the keyboard commands for a Mac... Speaking of Karl Metropolitan, he also runs New Citizens Incorporated on sim Kuula; he has a castle there too, it was home to a gallery of SL art, but according to the LM it has been closed by the SL nipple police... I TP'd over anyway, just to make sure they hadn't missed one, and found the place bare. The newbie station there is packed with freebies, but not nearly as aesthetically pleasing as Oxbridge. This is what it looks like.I asked, perhaps foolishly, the newbies I met here if they realized how priviledged their early second life seemed, but of course, they really had nothing to use as a comparison, plus they took forever to answer me, so after a while I gave up. But this place is in my reincarnation file...
