Art of love: volando Amat's SL Porto Cervo

SL Porto Cervo is one of the more enduring of SL's Italian art sims. Where so many have come and gone, this sim, themed loosely around the famous Sardinian resort town with a quirky style and mixture of shops, performance spaces and artwork, has survived thanks entirely to the enthusiasm and tenacity of its owner, volando Amat. Volando has a sweet, self-deprecating manner easy to underestimate; SL Porto Cervo is a tribute to her quiet determination to create in SL something other than the sum of her parts. It's a place that attracts in many cases an older crowd, and the gentle atmosphere encourages raw experimentation including short first-attempt machinima like this one. I asked her how Porto Cervo has survived, and what she sees as the most important part of her sojourn in SL.
volando Amat: I've been here in SL for over two years now. Our little world occupies a non-specific corner of this marvelous metaverse. Our goal is to create a place that is avatar -friendly, a place in continual development and flux, adapting to the changing needs of our residents. That means we're always busy making changes. We want to make a place of dreams and discover, exploration and experimentation. A place to get to know one's self and others, in a pleasing and intelligent atmosphere. It hasn't always been easy, there have been obstacles to overcome. We removed the camping area, and that upset a lot of people, a sort of camping mafia really had a problem with that; the sex side of SL I won't even mention. We eventually suspended the competitions in the disco, which also made a lot of people unhappy. The disco is an important element in Porto Cervo, it creates a venue for nightlife, for social events, and prevents the sim from becoming one of those magnificent desolate places of which there are already so many in SL. We still have a range of competitions and contests, including Miss Porto Cervo - held in recent days - but we stopped allowing the "quickie TP for a vote" - another less-than-popular decision. It's surprising how upset people get over this kind of thing. My philosophy springs from this idea: 'How much does it cost me to play here?' rather than: 'How much money can I make off others here?' and luckily I've encountered a lot of like-minded people.
I really wanted to create a place where people could ask themselves : Am I the same person within the game as I am in real life? Mirroring ourselves within SL, do we become better people? Kicca Igaly's sculpture in the central square of Porto Cervo really sums this up, it's a human figure - or an avatar? - flying between the real and the virtual world, caught permanently in the limnal space that defines us. As far as I am concerned, SL Porto Cervo exists to serve the community, and anyone who has something creative they'd like to share, and needs space in which to do it, is welcome to come here and be a part of our experience. What is there to see in SL Porto Cervo? A number of different attractions await. There's the theater dedicated to artist and performer Ipazia Cortez. There's a gallery dedicated to the sculptures of Maryva Mayo - many of her works will be distributed around the sim in the coming weeks, so you can admire them as you shop or simply soak in the atmosphere of the narrow streets and squares. There's the villa on the hill containing the love poems of the Latin writer Catullus (quick confession, it's my own contribution to Porto Cervo but based on an original design by Max Aabye.) Not to be missed, the ark in the bay, and the free helicopter rides that allow you to take in the newest part of Porto Cervo, the alpine region. Much of the cultural life of Porto Cervo is connected with writing and book publication. On a nearby rooftop, the bar area will soon be the venue for a presentation by Giovanna Delphin and her group Turisti per caso (more of them in a later post). Last but certainly not least, up on the mountain you'll find the area dedicated to Sardinian folksinger Andrea Parodi whose tragic death makes this beautiful song all the more poignant.

Latin for Lovers

Kiss me quick! the latest ArtsPark, a park for Catullus is up and running, and you and your squeeze should run over there and check it out. The park celebrates Gaius Valerius Catullus, patrician, part-time politician, poet and sometime pal of Julius Caesar. His tempestuous love affairs with Lesbia and Juventius produced poems that radiate the passion, the anguish, the contradictions and the joy of romance.
The build was by Max72mi Aabye co-founder, together w
ith Giuditta Broome, of the ArtsParks group. It took a couple of weeks to gather the material and interpret it into an idea of Catullus' lakeside villa at Sirmione, Italy.
The Porto Cervo sim with its beautiful waterfront makes a perfect backdrop for a little taste of Catullus' life and works, illustrated through mosaics, frescoes and poems. For your enjoyment here are English and Italian translations alongside the original Latin, a melting-pot of verse. "I love the idea of having the whole world around a table, eating together and talking, united by the same passion, and the same desire to work well together." Max72mi Aabye told me. "SL offers a unique way to make that happen." The owners of Porto Cervo agree. volando Amat told me she jumped at the chance to have a literary park on their sim. "For us it was an honor to host a park. When I came to Second Life, I felt quite alone. It can often feel like a sort of cultural desert. We want to offer residents a variety of interesting themes, and we were delighted to add a literary park to our other attractions."
While you're in Porto Cervo, con't miss their version of Picasso's hangout, El Quatre Gats tavern, now home to events like the launch of Ludovico Tebaldi's latest inworld novel. Also look out for Ipazia Cortez's latest exhibition which combines
art and humanitarian causes beautifully.
Go on, show the love. Take your sweetheart to see the
Catullus park. You'll be sure to get basia mille!
NB: Don't forget to vote for your favorite Russian author here in the left sidebar...

Dai, corri a
parco Catullo, insieme a quella persona a te più cara. Riceverai sicuramente basia mille!

Giuditta Broome

My fellow ArtsParkians: Meet Giuditta Broome our President! I spoke to her at ArtParks Center in Velinissimo, and asked: What inspired her to start the ArtsParks group?
Sports fan and art lover, initially Giuditta came to SL to start a soccer team. She's a member of the inworld team Fiorentina. She soon got interested in building, intrigued by the potential of expression possible in the virtual world.
Trips this summer to two literary parks,
Parco Salvatore Quasimodo and Parco Pirandello, both in Sicily, as well as the 3D reconstructions seen on TV of places like the pyramids and Pompeii, got her thinking: why not use SL to illustrate in an accessible way the life and works of authors, musicians, and artists of all kinds? More than that, why not create a grid-wide Teleport network so that residents can visit virtual art places more easily? The first ArtsPark is dedicated to the 19th century French author Jules Verne.
ArtsParks has just completed a park to showcase the life and work of the Latin poet Catullus at Porto Cervo. The group actively seeks the participation of anyone who would like to set up an area celebrating an artist, from the well-known to emerging talent. Being part of the ArtsPark TP network has a commercial benefit for sim owners and storekeepers; building together fosters community spirit, and it is one more way to show that the virtual world is so
mething more than an empty pastime. Parks can be of any size and anyone can share in the project, Giuditta pointed out, either by setting up an independent art space, or by donating space, skills, or thematic material - like authentic textures - related to a specific author or artist.

Giuditta: Il primo parco è dedicato a Jules Verne.
