In the zone(s)

It was about noon SLT when I got inworld today and did my usual double-take *what on earth am I wearing?* as I went through my pile of IMs and group messages. Moments later, I got a tp to go to Tanalois for a concert with guitarist extraordinaire rokkemasky Rolls. I'd never heard him before, boy is he good. He sang many songs in Italian, some wonderful numbers by Lucio Battisti, Fabrizio de Andre, and my personal favourite, Claudio Baglioni, and then surprised me by having an excellent diction with some Mark Knopfler, a bit of Beatles among others. If you like music from the 60's 70's and beyond, or if you think Italian music is all mandolins, you should definitely join his group which shares its name with the Rasky Club, is his usual hangout. Tonight - in Italy it was already 9 pm - he was doing an improvised after-dinner concert at the beachfront club of Aloisio Congrego and Tani Thor. Tani has made the sim lovely with both art exhibitions, a Tai Chi garden and lots of sand, so do explore while you're on sim Gemini Isle. Rokke shared with us some reminiscences of his youth, how the guitarist doesn't always get the girl, and how even if he does, his mind must always at least partly be on the safety of his instrument...

As rokke finished, I remembered that I had been planning on going over to see Votslav Hax's new sculpture garden (OK he sent me about a million reminders too, which helped me get the idea) at Pat O'Brien's - or more specifically the riverside garden just outside Pat's. Here's the TP (*oh yeah because my TP links always work*). Suddenly, it was lunchtime again! I had forgotten it was Vot's famed Sunday Brunch concert - what a treat to TP into the French Quarter and hear the dulcet tones of Prowess Rayna. She was talking about some life philosophy when I first arrived, which had me slightly puzzled, then suddenly, her fingers hit the keyboard and ...wow. As you can see from the photo down in the Italian bit, she's no wallflower; she played a number of her own composititions, really beautiful pieces. "I put a lot of my energy and my feelings, often painful feelings, into my pieces," she told us as she finished her original tune Thorny Glove. Her pain distilled into our listening pleasure.

As usual, the walls of Pat's were graced with good art, this week it's the turn of Wolk Writer whose paintings are just beautiful. You can see and buy the art inside the club, and you'll find a notecard with her biography on it just outside the building.

Outside is where I was, looking over the gaily coloured sculptures by another SL artist, White Lebed (Great Lindens above, some of these surnames are one double-entendre away from a French farce) whose work runs along the riverbank with the mossy cliffs of Gibson Island forming a pastel backdrop that set off her pieces a treat. Don't miss the show, and remember, the art at Pat's changes every two weeks. Brunch and supper, all in an hour or so? Time for some more toast, I think...Arrivata in metaverso a mezzogiorno SLT, ho avuto appena il tempo di pormi la solita domanda "ma cosa ho addosso? Non mi ricordo d'essermi vestita così ieri!!" e di leggere un po' d'IM e notice, quando mi arriva un TP per un concerto di rokkemasky Rolls. E un chittarista straordinario, ci ha fatto sentire un po' di Battisti, de Andre e Claudio Baglioni. Poi ha cantato anche in inglese, devo dire molto bene, un pezzo di Mark Knopfler io da sempre grandissima fan di Dire Straits puoi immaginare quanto mi è piaciuto. Era la prima volta che ho assistito a un concerto di rokke, non sarà l'ultima. Lui suona al suo locale Rasky Club che è anche il nome del suo gruppo in SL, abbonati per avere le sue notizie. Il concerto a Tanalois su sim Gemini Isle era una dopo-cena improvvisata sotto le stelle sulla riva del mare, sul palco costruito dalla bravissima Tani Thor. Ma la vostra Thirza non si ferma mai... Mentre ascoltavo rokkemasky, mi sono ricordata del nuovo parco d'arte sul sim French Quarter, accanto al famoso locale Pat O'Briens. Votslav Hax ha da pochi giorni inaugurato questa iniziativa, dando spazio sul prato lungo il fiume del sim a opere d'arte più grandi, le sculture che magari non possono essere esposti nell'interno del club. Arrivando col TP sulla strada davanti a Pat's ho sentito il pianoforte di un'altra artista bravissima, Prowess Rayna. Prowess ha suonato alcuni sue composizioni originali tra le quali il mio pezzo preferito Thorny Glove. Ecco l'artista in ...primo piano. Sulle pareti di Pat's c'erano i quadri d'una pittrice di grande talento, Wolk Writer è consigliabile passare presto per vedere i suoi quadri e magari comparne uno... le mostre cambiano ogni due settimane quindi non aspettare troppo a lungo. Naturalmente a New Orleans, era ora di pranzo, e infatti l'esibizione di Prowess faceva parte del concerto 'brunch' un'appuntamento da non perdere a Pat's ogni domenica verso l'ora del pranzo... ora SLT. L'idea di pranzo dopo un dopo-cena mi ha lasciato un po' confusa e molto affamata... Uscendo da Pat's, accanto all'ingresso troverai anche un note con la biografia dei vari artisti, sono interessanti perché conoscere la storia dell'arte la fa davvero vivere. Io sono uscita perché volevo vedere da vicino le sculture di White Lebed. Come vedi sono di colori sgargianti molto divertenti e vivaci, ringiovaniscono il lungofiume, mi sono piaciuti molto. Brunch, pranzo, cena, non importa quale pasto si mangia, nel metaverso l'appetito per l'arte rimane sempre appagata!

Welcome to New Orleans, and to Pat O'Briens the jewel in the crown of sim French Quarter. Excellent music. Interesting and diverse art. Atmosphere as cool and classy as the music. I was there for the first Thursday Night Jazz Session of the season. I only caught the first three acts, but it was beyond good - that's typical around here.

First up was Julian Hifeng, in RL Scott Fitzgerald, over 35 years a professional musician, who's rediscovering his jazz roots right here in the metaverse. Fast becoming a superstar in SL for both his music and his scholarly contributions in poetry and literature, he's featured here in both versions of reality. He has a very nice site on myspace - go see, you'll love it!
Like the other artists at Pat's, all his arrangements are original and there's a spontaneity about his pieces that speaks directly to his talent to turn the airwaves into liquid magic as he riffs from Bach to Richard Rogers, from Gershwin to McCartney and back.

When Julian had finished his set, it was time for a firm favourite of mine and everyone else's, Joaquin Gustav. Lots of lilting Latin pieces - he's a brilliant guitar player, and his between-songs banter has that South American thing going on that the ladies love. Lastly, I couldn't believe my ears when I heard Bones Writer. He blew us all away. A jazz pianist new to Pat O'Brien's I know he's going to become a regular. I managed to get a few words with the famed manager of the stars, Votslav Hax. I even persuaded him to pose on the bench outside the club, you can see the photo if you scroll down into the Italian regions... In my usual idly curious way, I wanted to know how he ended up here.
Votslav Hax: I was asked to run the place after Von Johin bought the sim. The name "Pat O'Brien's" was already here, and it being sinonimous with New Orleans...

Lmao, said I. Julian's music filled the room with that cool warmth only a really good musician can create, as I asked what (apart from me 'n' my questions) is the worst/hardest thing about 'doing' music in SL. I also wanted to know more about the art on display.
Votslav Hax: The hardest thing is juggling rl/sl lives amongst musicians and schedules. We all search out the art. What you're looking at right now is by Arinu Ling - we are very pleased to be able to show it here. If we see someone we all check him out and schedule him for a two week show. I've been doing this for over a year in SL, and I'm an artist in RL. I have my own gallery and studio downstairs. This plan closely resmbles a RL place i had a few years back, right down to the art on the walls, and the musicians...
Another friendly face at Pat O'Brien's is hostess BobbiJo Jonson. You can't miss her she's very warm and welcoming, and has distinctive red hair. I asked her what's the best part of working here.

BobbiJo Jonson: the talent! I love seeing and meeting people from all over. Each time is different, the music, the sharing and interaction of artist and listener. I enjoy the real people, no canned music or reactions. There's a 'live-ness' here, it's something you don't find a lot in Second Life, the beauty of the artist. Here we are sharing his talent, and the way they respond to what is happening. They don't just play covers, or mind-dulling songs over and over, and there's this magical blending of being a listener, feeding off the artist, and visa versa. Votslav is choosy and he has an ear..... and knows good things. I have been listening to Julian for months. He's a great jazz performer, and here in Second Life he shines: but he is just beginning, I think. I love watching and seeing the talent. and Vots won't settle for second best.

Step outside Pat's onto Bourbon Street, there's lots to see, including the pretty house shown below. Primsmith Kianeira MacDairmid of jewelry shop Dalriada at 201 Bourbon told me what she loves about this place.
Kianeira MacDiarmid: I set my own music station in this shop. I've been here about 5 months, I think - which is a lifetime in SL terms. I love it here, especially the trolley.

I had to ask about the name of the shop. Has it something to do with New Orleans?
Kianeira MacDiarmid: No. Dalriada is close to my heart as it is the Birthplace of the Nation of Scotland. Dalriada was in the Kilmartin Valley in the place we now call Scotland. The northern Irish immigrated there to a hill fort called Dunadd. They called themselves Scots. Then the Picts came too and they all lived together for a while. One night a fight broke out, the Picts were all drunk and they ended up getting killed, and the nation of Scotland was born.
Quite a tale. The shop is full of tiny wonders, I asked where she gets her inspiration from.

Kianeira MacDiarmid: My creations just appear on the end of my hand when i rez a prim. Some days nothing appears, other days I can't stop myself from creating! I know many don't like it but I love working with nano prims. I built a small shop for myself one day, here let me show you.

She rezzed the mini store at my feet.

Kianeira MacDiarmid: As you can see, I built it in miniature... then scaled it to enlarge it and only needed minor adjustments to some textures.

Genius. Just like the jazz. So there it is, friends of ArtsParks. The French Quarter, come for the music, stay for the jewels and the stories - or vice versa. Either way you'll be glad you did.

Benvenuti al locale Pat O'Brien's su sim French Quarter. Il bar più famoso di New Orleans, in versione SL è elegante, semplice, accogliente. Sulle pareti arte sempre nuova, interessante, in sintonia con la musica. Si viene a Pat's soprattutto per questo. Per sentire la musica jazz.

La nuova stagione di 'giovedì jazz' l'hanno inaugurato con alcuni dei più bravi musicisti nel metaverso. Il primo sul palco Julian Hifeng in giacca verde e pantaloni bianchi, accanto a una sua foto RL. Suo nome vero è Scott Fitzgerald musicista con più di trent'anni d'esperienza, non sta da molto nel metaverso e il suo arrivo qua coincide con una riscoperta personale dei suoi radici jazz. Ha un sito favoloso su Myspace. Julian prepara tutti i suoi arrangiamenti musicali personalmente, sono pezzi unici, e suo stile fluido incanta mentre lui passa da un'aria di Bach a una melodia di Rogers, da una canzone di Gershwin a un motivo dei Beatles. Julian Hifeng sta diventando famoso in SL non solo per la sua musica ma anche per i corsi che tiene sulla poesia e per la lettura dei suoi componimenti presso i vari gruppi di lingua inglese. Ci disse che quando è arrivato in Second Life, ha frequentato come spettatore molti jazz clubs per vedere cosa offrivono ed era colpito dalla musica 'big' - stumenti usati quasi come arma, per creare un effetto grosso. Il suo stile non è affatto così. Intimo, mai piccolo, ma personale, la sua chitarra acustica ci parla ci spiega le note come fiori colorati in un venticello deliziosamente rinfrescante.

Dopo Julian abbiamo ascoltato con molto piacere chitarrista Joaquin Gustav, famoso in SL non solo per le sue melodie latini ma anche per il suo bel voce con l'accento sudamericano da sogno... dopo Joachin un nuovo talento in SL, il pianista Bones Writer - posso solo dire Wow! energia, bravura, e un look perfetto. Se ti piace il pianoforte jazz, devi assolutamente sentirlo.
Il locale RL Pat O'Brien's è sinonimo con New Orleans, la buona cucina, la musica, l'atmosfera. Ho parlato con Votslav Hax, gestore del locale, l'ho convinto di accomodarsi sulla panchina, e mentre cercavo di scattare una foto decente, gli ho chiesto di raccontami un po' il locale SL.

Votslav Hax: Semplice. Quando Von Johin ha comprato il sim mi ha chiesto di gestire Pat's. Non sono di New Orleans, ma sono artista e un po' di anni fa avevo un locale simile a questo, con un bar, la musica live e soprattutto l'arte - vari amici esponevano da me, era un'esperienza molto bella che ho voluto ricreare qua. Organizzare i concerti tenendo in mente gli impegni reali e virtuali di tutti gli artisti è abbastanza difficile. Noi andiamo a vedere vari artisti e quando troviamo qualcuno che ci colpisce come gruppo, lo invitiamo di esporre qua, ogni mostra dura due settimane.

BobbiJo Jonson la hostess con i capelli rossi a Pat's mi ha detto che ama lavorare qua 'per il talento! Tanto. Musicisti bravissimi! Julian l'ho visto crescere come musicista virtuale in questi mesi, ascoltarlo è sempre un piacere e mi piace osservare il pubblico sempre più vasto, come reagiscono alla musica. Qui non sentirai mai la musica 'in scatola' - è tutto reale, vivo, fresco.Per i musicisti un pubblico attento e partecipe è fondamentale, crea la magìa, rende ogni serata una gioia sempre nuova. Gli artisti suonano arrangiamenti fatti esclusivamente per SL, e si sente. Votslav ha orrecchio, e buon gusto, è esigente ma in senso buono e noi tutti lo apprezziamo per questo.' Giovedì sera verso le 21 ora SL comincia il concerto jazz, ma non temere, se questo orario ti è scomodo ci sono anche concerti sabato e domenica in giornata - il gruppo Symbiotic manda notice e orari e conviene farne parte se ti piace il jazz.

Uscendo da Pat's ti trovi su Bourbon Street, ed è molto piacevole fare una passeggiata per la via più famosa di New Orleans. Questa casa stupenda dà un'idea dello stile architettonico del Sud, e ci sono anche molti bei negozi. Ho incontrato orafa virtuale Kianeira MacDairmid mi ha detto che ama lavorare su questo sim soprattutto per l'atmosfera. La musica è ovunque (infatti qui vicino c' un l'altro locale di musica country: Blue Note Studio) e le piacciono tanto i tram! Il negozio si chiama Dalriada - ma non è un nome cajun come pensavo io, è un posto in Scozia, infatti la vallata dove si può dire è nata quella nazione. Due tribù i Pict e gli Scozzesi convivevano là per un periodo, ma una sera, dopo una birrata... esaggerata, hanno litigato e la banda dei Pict sono stati uccisi... e gli Scozzesi hanno preso possesso del paese.
Una storia di ...spirito. Keineira crea oggetti molto belli le ho chiesto da cosa le ispira. Per lei, ogni giorno è un'avventura, a volte non reisce a creare nulla, altre volte, appaiono prim alle punte delle dita, non sa neanche come succede. Creare per lei è come la magìa, ogni volta diversa, ogni volta una sfida nuova, e perciò le appassiona fare, anche per vedere come reagiscono i clienti, il suo pubblico. Lavora con i nano prim, per molti una fatica ma per lei un piacere. Ha anche costruito una versione mini del suo negozio per il 5° anniversaio di SL. Eccola molto graziosa.

Sim French Quarter. Se lo visiti per la musica, e ti troverai incantato dall'arte - o vice versa. In ogni caso, un posto geniale: lo sentirai anche tu.
